The Club was formed in 1971 at the instigation of Mrs M A. Hall, a Golden Retriever enthusiast and dog judge, who lived in Perth. She was supported by among others, Ivy Osborne (Goldens) John McKinlay (Cairns) and Ian Butchart (Shelties).
The first tentative meetings were held in Perth after relevant breed club secretaries were asked to send at least two representatives from each breed. Mrs Hall invited Charles Alexander, a solicitor in St Andrews who had Rough Collies and a Sheltie, to be the first secretary and supply legal advice.
At a second meeting a Committee was formed, after voting took place, from those representatives present, and a few other knowledgeable and interested people. This committee therefore had and still has a representative for each breed plus others.
The club held two Open shows each year from 1972 and the first Championship Show was held in 1985 where BIS under Ann Argyle was the Golden Retriever Sh CH Zach of Dunblair.
The show is unique in that it has 12 breeds over 4 groups. As far as we are aware it is the only show of it’s kind in the world. The sister club in Victoria Australia has 14 breeds Border Collies and Border Terriers are both scheduled at this club.
