SBCS OPEN SHOW 21 SEPTEMBER 2024
SKYE TERRIER CRITIQUES
MEGAN ROBERTS- SUNABIL
Thank you to the committee of SBCS for inviting me to judge at their show and for the warmth of their welcome. Also thanks to my two efficient stewards who looked after me very well. I was delighted to receive an entry of 23 Skyes, although due to an accident one exhibitor was unable to come, making the final number of dogs exhibited 21. Thank you to all those exhibitors for their entries. Overall the dogs were all put down in excellent condition and good coats. However I was surprised to find that a number of exhibits had a degree of tartar build up on several of their teeth.
Puppy (3,1)
- Mclean & Weir’s Rhoderns Boreray. 8 month old cream drop ear bitch. Long, low and level puppy. Good conformation- long rib and short loin. Moved well but was a bit nervous on being gone over. This will come with practice. A very promising elegant young puppy with a very sweet expression.
- Shearer-Taylor’s Verumamicus Drusus. 11month old prick ear cream male puppy. Powerful head for such a young dog. Good ear fringing and coat developing nicely. Uses ears well. Long level topline but was unsettled on the move. He should do well in future.
Junior (2,0)
- Mclean & Weir’s Rhoderns Ananke. 1 year old dark grey bitch who has a promising future ahead. Superbly presented and handled. She oozes class. Feminine head, long crested neck, good ear placement and dentition. Excellent topline and rear movement which is aided by good muscle tone in her thighs. She flows so freely around the ring.
- Kidd’s Vindovala Loch Lomond at Corrieglen.13 month old dark grey bitch. Long and low. Broad shoulders with deep chest. Has a thick coat which needs more work to present at its best. She was uneasy at first due to lack of showing experience and would benefit from more ringcraft training. Movement was slightly untidy but again would improve with more practice.
Post-Graduate (4,0)
1.O’Rourke. Borcho Skoosh of Struanmore. 3½ year old cream bitch. Feminine head. Good, crested neck and level topline. Coat in excellent condition for a bitch who has a 4 month old litter Strong rear quarters and moved freely round the ring. She is a bitch I have admired, and she did not disappoint, I was so pleased to see how she has come back into condition so quickly after her litter.
2.Shearer-Taylor. Riskerytree Ruaridh at Bilkenstar. 2 year old black male. Well presented. Good thick coat. Strong head. Long rib, short loin. Level topline. A dog, who as the exhibitor admits is nervous in the show ring. Moved okay. Was slightly unsettled by the proximity of dogs in the adjoining ring Ear set could be better.
3.Macdonald. Riskerytree the Countess.
Limit Dog (3,1)
1.McLean Whicheeta Walk the Line to Rhoderns. 5 1/2year black male. Strong dog, powerful head with good fringing. Broad shoulder with deep chest. Long and level topline. Hindquarters excellent muscle tone which gave him good movement around the ring. Full coat with excellent presentation.
2.Mcleod’sEsgia Glen Garioch. Just under 7 year old dark grey male. Thick full double coat. Long rib, low to ground. Good muscle tone which aided movement. Tail could be better.
Limit Bitch (4,4)
1.Hamilton. Headscrook Head or Tails. 31/2year old grey bitch. This bitch epitomises the 3 “L’s” of a Skye terrier- she is very long, low to ground and has level topline that she holds at all times. Lovely head and expression. Excellent muscle in her rear quarters which gave her lovely free movement round. Well presented in good textured coat. BB and RBOB.
2 O’Rourke. Esgia Glen Scotia of Borcho just under 7 year old cream bitch. Elegant bitch. Good head fringing and ear set. Good quality coat well presented. Level topline, long rib, short loin. Good muscle tone and rear movement. Not quite as long in body.
3.McLeod. Esgia’s Lone Wolf
Open Dog(2,0)
1.Pringle. Ch Esgia the Exciseman ShCEx. Nearly 7 year old cream male. Good strong dog. Lovely headpiece and expression. Firm level topline which he held at all times. Pleasing proportions, good length rib to loin. Good coat texture and superb presentation. Moved freely. Flowing around the ring with his correctly carried tail adding to the overall picture of elegance. BD and BOB. Delighted to see that he also went on to be awarded Best terrier.
2. McLean and Weir. Rhoderns Hamish. 3 year old black male. Long, low and level. Good textured coat with excellent presentation. Strong head and long neck giving an elegant picture. Deep ribcage. Slightly unsettled on move due to proximity of dogs in adjoining ring. Movement is free and strong but tail carried too high which detracts from his outline on the move.
Open bitch (3,0)
1.Pringle Ch Esgia First and Fairest, nearly 7 year old cream bitch. litter sister to winner of open dog. lovely head and expression. Crested neck and poses an elegant picture. Low and level with good length of rib. Like her brother she has a firm topline and excellent coat. Strong hindquarters with firm muscle. Free flowing movement around the ring.
2.Mclean and Weir. Rhoderns Heather. 3-year-old cream bitch. Pretty bitch with sweet expression. Long, low and level. Superb textured coat, with yet again excellent presentation from the breeders. She has free flowing elegant movement and presents a lovely overall picture on moving. She could do with a bit more body. Unlucky to meet 1 today as it was a close run decision.
3. McLeod. Esgia Cry Freedom

1. Cox’s Strufingill Top Gun for Coirantee. Broad head with dark eye, strong jaw and good pigment. Well laid-back shoulder and return of upper arm with balanced angulation in hindlimbs. Excellent length of rib. Although he was not giving his handler an easy time he was sympathetically handled and won on his slightly better reach and drive on the move. BPD, BPIB
2. Handley’s Strufingill Maverick at Barkenbear. The more settled of the two puppies in the class, he has a good broad flat head with breed typical expression. Balanced angulation and moved well but not quite the extension of 1.
Class 25 – Junior dog (1)
1. Handley’s Strufingill Maverick at Barkenbear.
Class 26 – Graduate (2)
1. Cox’s Braesnobel Salt n’ Pepper for Coirantee. Well-proportioned broad flat heat and produced a nice outline on the stand. Good reach of neck and length of rib with balanced angulation. Moved out with better reach and drive than 2.
2. Gibb and Dungavell’s Debbeacol Devil in Disguise for Pirateer. This boy has a good strong masculine head with pleasing expression and dark pigment. Balanced angulation but would prefer a longer length of rib. Out moved today by 1.
Class 27 – Postgraduate dog (3,2)
1. Walker’s Allachoy Dances with Wolves. Stood alone today but a worthy class winner. This boy has a masculine head with dark eye. Balanced angulation, good forechest but would prefer a slightly longer rib, moved well. Coat well presented and enhanced his overall shape.
Class 28 – Open dog (5,4)
1. Handley’s Bargemon Brigadoon at Barkenbear JW. This boy was the standout of the class producing a beautiful outline when standing. He is well proportioned and has a good broad head with strong lower jaw. Good forechest and balanced angulation. Excellent coat enhanced his shape. Moved well with reach and drive. BD, BOB.
2. Savage and McLean’s Talraz Comic Relief at Canaich JW. Another well proportioned boy with good head and pigment, Balanced angulation but not quite the length of rib of 1. Didn’t move with as much reach and drive today as I know he can.
Class 29 – Puppy bitch (2)
1. Savage and McLean’s Strufingill Penny Benjamin at Canaich. Has a good broad flat head with dark eye and good pigment. Nice outline on the stand. Good layback of shoulder and return of upper arm and balanced angulation behind. Moved well with reach and drive.
2. Robertson’s Quothquan Aylyth. Raw 6-month-old puppy who was a bit overwhelmed today and therefore didn’t show to her best advantage. Slighter built than 1. She has a good profile on the stand with nice reach of neck and good forechest with well laid-back shoulders. Excellent length of rib, just a bit unsettled on the move, will be interested to see how she develops.
Class 30 – Junior bitch (2,1)
1. Robertson’s Quothquan Aylyth.
Class 31 – Graduate bitch (1)

Good layback of shoulder and return of upper arm and correct angulation behind. Good forechest and excellent length of rib. Although her handler struggled on the move because of her correct construction she could not fail to move correctly with reach and drive. BB, RBOB.
Class 32 – Postgraduate bitch (1,1)
Class 33 – Open bitch (3,1)
1. Muir’s Douglasdale Dream Island – A mature girl with broad flat head of correct proportions, eyes toning with coat. Balance angulation, length coming from rib,
and good forechest. Held her topline so much better than when I last judged her, just has a habit of putting her head down which can spoil her movement sometimes.
2. Higgins’ Allachoy Isle of Neave – Produced a nice outline on the stand. Broad flat head of correct proportions. Balanced angulation and moved well but felt my winner moved better. Good jacket, well presented.

P 3(1) 1.Cuthbertson’s LAINNIEREACH STAR GAZER 6 mnth b. Most attractive head of correct proportions, eyes shining with mischief. Well engineered fore and aft with correct topline. Excellent flow from shapely neck into good lay of shoulder. Moved with good cadence , straight and true using her tail in balance. Most promising. BPIB & BPIS 2. Miller & Miller’s CAFOTALIENA HEART OF A HERO Pleasing skull and head proportions on this nicely maturing male. Good to depth of brisket and spring of rib. Little upright in upper arm so not quite the reach at the moment, short to metatarsals giving power to hind. Tailset may well improve with age.
J 1(0) 1. Miller & Miller’s CAFOTALIENA HEART OF A HERO
G 4 (2)1.Mcfarlane’s ARDNADAM WILLOW COPICE AT MACDUI Carrying a little weight to back and shoulder hindering active movement but straight and true. Not overdone to angulation fore and aft, rather steep to croup. Good to head & eye, 2.Gray’s KATTANDALE BLAC HAWKE’S BAY AT BIRNIEHILL Good to head and flow of neck, tad long in loin and I would like to see a broader second thigh but this can be worked on with correct exercise. Liked forward reach on the move.
PG 4(1) 1.Hogg & Hogg’s GAILIECH NGALYOD Overall balance good, , standing on best of feet. Excess skin to throat, topline good and moved with power and cadence with tail in balance. 2.Yates GAILIECH IRIS GODDESS Super head of good proportions, well laid shoulder , tad weak to second thigh but tidy hock to floor. Erratic movement but offered a few strides of controlled power 3. Brown & Brown’s MOSSCRIPT PORT ELLEN
L 3(0) 1.Munro & Munro’ PANTHERA BAD MEDICINE DULMAUR Excels in shoulder placement and flow of topline. Short to metatarsals giving good impulsion from behind and sufficient reach to fore. Enough bone and depth of brisket , would like tad more depth to muzzle. On balance RBIB 2. Miller & Miller’s LIRIC JUST THE TICKET Good to forehand with masculine head , Plenty heart and lung room, strong to loin. Not driving from behind today so lacking flow in movement.3. Tait’s FORESTER’S NORTHERN LIGHTS OF DARKMOOR AT MUCHHART
O 3(1) 1. Cuthbertson’s LAINNIREACH ANGELS SHARE Liked her overall balance and head of correct proportions, Would benefit from better fitness to really finish the picture. Loved her expression, movement with excellent impulsion from strongly built hind quarters and easy reach to fore. Not a flashy b. honest and substantial without coarseness. BOB 2. Miller & Miller YENNADON CALVAY JW SHCEX OSW. Another quality b. with a lot to like in stance including well laid shoulder and pleasing topline. Today, movement let her down behind.
